The National Junior Honor Society Chapter of Reagan Middle School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to 8th grade students who meet the required standards in five areas of evaluation: leadership, scholarship, service, citizenship, and character. Standards for selection are established by the national office of NJHS and have been revised to meet our local chapter needs. Students are selected to be members by a Faculty Council, appointed by the principal, which bestows this honor each year upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school.
Current 8th grade students who have attended Reagan Middle School for a minimum of one semester and who meet the scholarship requirement (cumulative grade point average of 3.66 or better) will be invited to complete a Candidate Selection Form during the month of January 2008. The Faculty Council will review the Candidate Selection Form to help evaluate the candidate's leadership, service, citizenship, and character. 7th grade students who have attended Reagan Middle School for a minimum of one semester and who meet the scholarship requirement (cumulative grade point average of 3.66 or better) will be invited to complete a Candidate Selection Form during the month of April 2008. The Faculty Council will review the Candidate Selection Form to help evaluate the candidate's leadership, service, citizenship, and character.
To evaluate a candidate's leadership, service, citizenship, and character, the Faculty Council uses school disciplinary records, report cards and citizenship grades, teacher input, and a letter of recommendation from an adult who does not work at Reagan Middle School. The Faculty Council takes note of those candidates who complete their form on their own, and those who do not. A majority vote of the council is necessary for selection into the Reagan National Junior Honor Society. Candidates are notified regarding selection or non-selection according to a predetermined method and schedule.
Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school to recognize all the newly selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all five criteria that led to their selection. This obligation includes regular attendance at meetings and active participation in school and community service projects.
